How Travel Changed My Life Post-Divorce
Divorce can be one of the most challenging chapters in life. It's a period of transition, self-reflection, and often, rediscovery.
I want to share a deeply personal journey with you — one where travel helped to give me the clarity and courage to get a divorce, to learn who I am again, and inspired the constant rediscovery of myself as I continue to grow through travel.
Divorce is undoubtedly one of the most difficult and emotionally charged experiences one can go through.
It's a journey filled with highs and lows, self-discovery, and healing. If you're reading this, you might be on this journey yourself or have someone close to you who is.
I want you to know that you're not alone.
I remember the day I decided to get a divorce. I had planned a trip to Spain—a country that has been near and dear to my heart since I lived there in my early 20s—for myself and my then-husband. I had bought tickets to see Adele in Barcelona, which inspired the trip, and I was so excited to share one of my favorite places in the world with him.
But as soon as the trip started, we got in an argument in the airport, and I think we both knew it was the beginning of the end. We still went on the trip, but it wasn’t the romantic European vacation that I was hoping for.
I remember standing at that Adele concert by myself in the front of the arena, and I was so close to her. I sang every lyric along with her, and I felt every single word. I cried as I thought about how I’d lived in Spain twice at such a young age, and how I had so much courage to do that by myself.
Where was that person?
In that moment, despite the circumstances, I was so happy. I was traveling to a place that I actually wanted to go, and I was doing the things that made me feel inspired again.
And then I had the moment of clarity that I had been searching for for so many years:
I was going to be alone, and I was going to be just fine.
When I got home from that trip, I moved out within a couple of weeks. A switch had flipped that I couldn’t turn back on.
It was a heart-wrenching time filled with pain, doubts, and a sense of loss. The life I had known for years was changing, and with it, my identity seemed to crumble.
But there was also a small glimmer of excitement at the idea of reinventing myself. So I impulsively booked myself a solo trip to Australia.
Solo travel can be a transformative experience, but it's not without its challenges.
The solitude, especially in unfamiliar places, can sometimes feel daunting. It's during these moments that the longing for companionship becomes apparent.
This is what I realized when I took my post-divorce solo trip in 2019, and although I am so grateful for the experience, I also realized solo travel wasn’t for me.
While my solo adventures have brought me profound insights, there have been so many times when I wished I could have shared the beauty of those moments with someone. It's a sentiment echoed by many solo travelers.
This is why my group trips are the answer for so many people.
